Studio F. A. Porsche was founded in 1972 by Professor Ferdinand Alexander Porsche, whose visionary design approach shaped the Porsche 911 just as much as it did numerous international design classics. His understanding of design as a strategic factor for success and a key driver of brand identity has formed the foundation of our work to this day.

A legacy that looks ahead
1935
Early enthusiasm
Born on 11 December 1935, Ferdinand Alexander Porsche was the eldest of Dorothea and Ferry Porsche’s four sons. From an early age, he spent much of his time in his grandfather’s design studios and engineering workshops in Stuttgart, where he developed a deep appreciation for design and innovation. In 1943, the Porsche family relocated to Austria, where he attended school in Zell am See.

Designer at Porsche
After the family returned to Stuttgart, Ferry Porsche transformed his father’s engineering and design office into the sports car manufacturer Porsche. In 1958, Ferdinand Alexander Porsche joined the family business as a designer, beginning a career that would profoundly shape the company’s design identity.
1963
The creation of an icon
His first major challenge was designing what would become the Porsche 911. With its unmistakable silhouette, clean lines, and uncompromising functional design, Ferdinand Alexander Porsche created an icon that has defined generations of sports cars and continues to shape the brand to this day. The 911 became the purest expression of his design philosophy: form follows function, reduced to the essentials. In creating it, he further refined his instinct for technology, materials, proportion, and above all, uncompromising purism.

The founding of the studio as a fresh start
The early 1970s marked a turning point for the company. As Porsche KG was restructured into a public limited company (AG), members of the Porsche family stepped back from operational roles. Although Ferdinand Alexander Porsche remained on the Supervisory Board, corporate governance required him to relinquish his position as Chief Designer. Rather than marking an end, this became the beginning of a new chapter. In 1972, driven by a passion for design rather than commercial ambition, he founded Porsche Design in Stuttgart—a studio dedicated to transferring his design philosophy beyond the automobile.

His ambition was to reduce objects to their essential form, combining technical precision with timeless aesthetics. 2015
A new name – A tribute to our founder
Since 2015, the studio has carried the name of its founder: Studio F. A. Porsche. The renaming pays tribute to Ferdinand Alexander Porsche and references the signature he established on his work: “Design by F. A. Porsche.” At the same time, it reflects the studio’s evolution into an independent design consultancy with greater creative freedom, serving international clients beyond the Porsche Design brand.
